Hundreds flee Haiti before Hurricane Ike strikes
Hundreds fled Haiti in search of highlands from the waterlogged city of Gonaives fearing Hurricane Ike. The NHC rated Hurricane Ike at category four, which is extremely destructive in nature. Red alerts have been sounded.

FEARING A new hurricane, named ’Ike’, hundreds of residents fled Haiti in search of highlands from the waterlogged city of Gonaives. The people fled in fear as they recalled the devastation caused by the previous storm.

As per the reports of the American National Hurricane Centre (NHC), Hurricane Ike has suddenly reached a more dangerous level - ’category four’ in the Atlantic on Saturday (September 6) and is approaching Haiti gradually. As a precautionary measure, red alerts have been sounded at Gonaives and other parts of Haiti.

According to NHC, Hurricane Ike will cause strong winds and rain in Haiti and Dominican Republic. Recently, Haiti faced a devastating flood, caused by the tropical storm ’Hanna’, which left hundreds of people dead and hundreds of thousands of people displaced and distressed.

The NHC has warned that Ike is about 145km east of Grand Turk Island near the southern Bahamas and is expected to barrel into Cuba either on Sunday (September 7) or Monday (September 8). The NHC has also stated that according to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, that usually measures the devastating rate of a hurricane, Ike is rated at category four, which is extremely destructive in nature. It may also hit southern Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana and the rest of the US Gulf Coast. All these places were affected badly by Hurricane Gustav last week.
