THE GREATER Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections have become a matter of serious concern for all political parties. The last date of filing nominations is approaching and no main political party is in a position to reach an agreement over sharing of seats with allies. Friday is the last date for filing nominations for 150 divisions.

Both the Congress and Telegu Desam sought the cooperation of PRP and Left Parties respectively, but no agreement has yet been arrived at. The PRP is still waiting for a last minute agreement with the Congress and its Political Affairs Committee has decided to contest the elections, irrespective of whether the   Congress ties up with them.

The Telegu Desam is still waiting for the Left parties, but they are very reluctant to approach them as Chandrababu Naidu wants to give them a small number of seats. Already both the parties CPI and CPI (M) have released their list of candidates. Even then both are discussing issues with the leaders of TDP for an amicable solution.

TRS President Chandrasekhar is unhappy with the elections and he has not given the green signal to his party cadres on contesting the elections. Only Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced candidates for more than hundred divisions. It has no problems with seat-sharing, adjustments with other parties, like the Loksatta, which has also declared candidates for more than 75 divisions.

The Congress party’s position is very dicey since the high command is not clearly indicating whether to go it alone or with PRP. When the talks were on, the In-Charge of AP Congress Affairs, Mr. Moily commented in Delhi that his party would not tie up with PRP. At that time, Chiranjeevi was in the Secretariat to meet Chief Minister Rosaiah about seat adjustments. Soon after hearing Moily’s statement, Rosaiah cancelled the meeting with Chiranjeevi and this irritated the PRP leaders.

Finally, the Congress party has prepared extensive lists after a five hour exercise at a faraway place in the city and it is currently with the PCC President.
