The meeting deliberated on different political dynamics that are developing in the context of the general elections scheduled in 2014 and deliberate attempts by some parties and vested interests on some pretext or the other to create communal conflicts not only in Hyderabad but all over the state to polarize voters for electoral gains.
It was observed that this phenomenon of engineering communal conflicts before the elections has been going on for years and enhanced awareness about this should be taken to people across the state and the country, a press release informed.
It also deliberated on the need for long and short term initiatives and strategies to address the issue of communalisation and violence and concluded that there is a need to reach out to and work with the communities, use traditional and social media more effectively, engage in effective advocacy with the administration and address and correct school curriculum where it is being used to spread communal propaganda and poison young minds.
It was also resolved to start a Facebook Page and an E-Group under the name Hyderabad Peace Coalition to share information and activities amongst all concerned.
A list of 46 sensitive localities in Hyderabad and 120 towns and villages in the state of Andhra Pradesh where violence has taken place in the past or could happen in future if corrective measures are not taken. Consistent work in these locations by concerned citizens and peace activists can prevent outbreak of violence despite any political or other provocations. All those who can devote 4 to 6 hours per month are requested to select one such locality near their area and start appropriate interventions. Hyderabad Peace Coalition shall provide the required training, inputs and contacts in all these sensitive areas.
The meeting also decided to conduct a ToT (Training of Trainers) on “Community Mobilisation to Prevent Riots” on Sunday, 18th November 2012 from 10 am to 1 pm at Oxford Grammar School, Himayatnagar, Hyderabad. This will enable participants to engage at the grassroots to prevent outbreak of conflicts and violence.
The meeting resolved to approach prominent citizens of Hyderabad to issue a joint statement on the prevailing situation and also represent all concerned authorities to urge them to take immediate and appropriate actions to ensure that the ongoing conflict is contained immediately and no attempts at spreading disaffection and instigating violence in Hyderabad or any other part of the state are allowed.
