HAPPINESS IS a state of mind is an age old cliche. Nevertheless how true it is today. If you think you are happy, you are indeed happy. On the contrary, if you are harassed by nagging doubts you will never come out of that self-created cobweb to enjoy the sunshine that breeds happiness.
If I am happy as an individual, that is not enough to give me happiness in its totality. My neighbour should be happy; so should the little girl down the lane be too. In other words, the society has to be happy in order to let the real bonus of happiness be shared by all citizens, young and old alike. The sixth principle of the Arya Samaj, a great social cum religious institution reforming one and all says : The main aim of the Arya Samaj is to do good to the human society; physical, spiritual and social. The Arya Samaj thereby generates happiness among young and old alike.
The Vedas, most ancient scriptures in the library of mankind enjoin on us to do social service to generate Happiness leading to good health, banishment of diseases. That is the result of sowing seeds in the form of good deeds and never ever scheming against fellow human beings.TRAINING THE MINDMind is the Man. It is my mind that makes me realise that I am happy or I am suffering. So, the first step tyowards realisation of the goal of happiness is to train the mind. His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet has written in his book The Art of Happiness that mind should be trained through knowledge. The knowledge is to understand one's self, to dispel darkness and eventually to develop a good Heart. The mind and the heart combine to lead the individual to Happiness. A Ved mantra also emphasises KET, the joint power of mind and heart that lead an individual to happiness. One has to develop calmness of mind to achieve the goal of happiness. This development may be achieved therough constant practice and renunciation of the mundane. In Sanskrit it is called Abhyas and Vairagya that Yogeshwar Shri Krishna lays emphasis on to achieve the ultimate goal - happiness.Let us not mistake worldly pleasures as Happiness. Money is indeed important but money is not everything in life. Money will be of little use if the moneyed man cannot enjoy his food because of poor health. Similarly, money earned through dishonest means will not give happiness as the fear of the long arm of law will be hanging like the sword of Damocles.MOKSHA OR LIBERATIONIn the Vedic philosophy of life the final goal of a soul is Moksha or liberation from the cycle of birth, death and rebirth. The depth of Happiness of a soul on attainment of Moksha cannot be fathomed. It is limitless. All actions or inactions of the soul are judged from time to time and the happiness that accrues to it on attaining Moksha just beggars description. Thus it is Moksha where you and I shall experience Happiness of the highest level called Anand. Let us sublimate our desire of achieving happiness to the level of experiencing Anand of Moksha.
