Education is the theme of the film I am Kalam and the journey young Kalam takes is truly inspiring. The critics are raving about this simple story.
EVEN AFTER receiving rave reviews for the film in Cannes in 2010, this film struggled to get a release in India. I am Kalam is all about dreaming high and making something meaningful out of one’s life. The importance of education is also highlighted time and again in this film. Director debutant Nila Madhab Panda avoids clichés, melodramas or heart wrenching dialogues. The simplicity makes this film successful.
I am Kalam clearly takes a stand and tell us again and again that education is the basic thing and this should be provided to every child as it is the basic right of every individual. Equal opportunities that come with education are also highlighted in this movie. Director has told us through the underprivileged character who dreams the moon and the stars and makes it possible with sheer will that sky is the limit, if one has the will.
Although the theme of the film is very serious but the tone of the movie is light and entertaining.
We require more of such stories, instead of the mindless comedies that we witness every Friday evening. These kinds of the stories, which educate and entertain, are like the social consciousness that makes us aware of our social obligations.
Young Kalam, Chotu is a happy kid who wants to make it big. Apart from dreaming the one thing he does best is make people smile. The endearing actor brings forth similar kind of emotion and the audience is compelled to give in his charm. He sells chai for a living and in the process can strike up conversation with everyone. He is one of those characters we have in our life, who can make us smile with their simplest words. Chotu never loses courage.
The film is a wonderful journey of a small boy from the rags to the riches, yet it is minus the dark element we saw in Slumdog Millionaire. This weekend take the journey with young Kalam as it will definitely enlighten your life.
