I come from a family of musicians - my father is a singer, my grandmother taught music, my grandfather was a flutist and everyone else is musically inclined to music in one way or another. My first tryst with music was just being around them. Growing up, I started singing at home, at school, at competitions and it became a form of expression for me.
Any special reason for singing in English - considering that songs in Hindi have much larger audience in India?
I guess that's mostly by default since I spent a lot of time since school singing songs in English - in the school choir, at talent shows, singing contests etc. Although I'm not partial to any language, most of my performances to date have been in English. I am a Tamilian from Kerala and I grew up in Dubai. I hope to work on projects wherein I can explore singing and writing incorporating languages I've grown up with.
Which kind of music appeals to you the most - pop, rock, blues, folk or country?
I enjoy music for the kind of energy that comes with it - so I pretty much listen to music across genres and languages. It is also amazing to watch bands, musicians and singers live on stage and soak in that kind of energy in person.
Have you released any music album so far? Any plans in the pipeline? Or are you just happy with live performances?
I have recently released an original single with Jeet Singh called "Twenty Five". We released it on YouTube and saw some incredible responses within days and the song was featured on MTV as well. The song is a light-hearted piece about living in the present and being in a '25' state of mind. This is my first original project and I had such an amazing time writing it and working on it with Jeet. It was really fulfilling to see it through to release. Here's a link to the official music video of the song - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jg-tZMZexXk
Jeet and I also collaborated on a cover project where we worked on our rendition of Gotye's amazing song, "Somebody that I used to know" and released it earlier in the year. Although the response to "Twenty Five" has definitely motivated me to write and work on more original projects, I'm also really excited at the opportunity to work with some really talented people out there on fun and interesting collaborations. I also really hope I can do a lot more live performances this year, incorporating these works.
In today's generation of commercial singers where do you find yourself?
I'm only at the beginning here - So I'm just getting starting off on a path to discovering myself as an artist.
That's a tough one. (laughs)
What are your upcoming performances?
Currently, I'm back at home with my folks in Dubai for some down time and I'm figuring out my 2013. You can catch my updates on https://www.facebook.com/MeghaGirishMusic
Have you collaborated with any known composers and singers?
I've had the privilege of working with Sandeep Chowta on my first playback song in 08. It was a fun song for a Telugu film called 'Saleem'. I also had the opportunity to work with Raghu Dixit on a part of the background score for the Bollywood film "Mujhse Fraandship Karoge". They were both amazing learning experiences for me. Additionally, I've worked on jingles and voice overs for brands as well. My most recent collaboration has been with with Jeet Singh on my original single 'Twenty five" and we've worked on cover projects as well.
