A POWERFUL blast rocked the Fancy Bazar area in Guwahati on Thursday around 9.15 pm. However, a major tragedy was averted as policemen had spotted the IED planted under a push cart and set off an alert enabling the people to move to safer places.
The bomb planted near the sani temple adjacent to Central jail was dumped with sandbags to ensure that it did not cause any damage to life and property. The IED device exploded before the bomb disposal squad could defuse it. Sources said that National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) militants could be behind the bomb blast.
Security has been beefed up in Guwahati and the city has been put on high alert to ensure that no untoward incident takes place in the state.
