Twitter apologised for verifying an account when it was fake for an entire day. They are yet to release a statement as to how it happened. The media mogul has not commented on the mix up.
AN UNKNOWN person had a field day when he/she was verified by Twitter as the wife of media mogul Rupert Murdoch. The fake account by the name of @Wendi_Deng came to existence on Sunday soon after the News Corp Chief Executive started his own twitter account on New Year’s Eve. After the account of Murdoch’s was verified, the account of his wife was also given the blue tick that differentiates known personalities from the common man. However, soon Twitter had to remove the sign as it was confirmed on Tuesday that the account was not Murdoch’s wife’s.

Twitter released a statement accepting their fault and apologised for the goof up. As reported in samachar.com, Twitter spokesman Matt Graves did not want to comment futher on the matter. Apparently, after the account was verified and the fake Wendi tweeted that she was joining her husband for a vacation, around 10,000 people started following her. Everyone was interested to get a glimpse into the world of the media mogul and his wife.
This whole thing blew out of proportion when The Guardian believing the account to be real wrote a story with the headline “Wendi Deng flirts with Ricky Gervais after joining husband on Twitter.” How this happened is not clear but Twitter has a verification process, whereby each celebrity is checked with before their accounts get that blue tick. Currently, the microblogging site has as many as 17000 verified accounts belonging to celebrities. The person behind the account is yet to come to the fore but he/she tweeted, “And you have to wonder even more why Twitter verified this account for a full day. I never received any communication from them about this.”
Twitter, a hot spot for the celebrities, has goofed up the first time, and so nothing much is being said about the matter. Rupert Murdoch has also not issued any statement regarding the whole fiasco and it seems that the whole thing has been taken up in good spirit.
