THE FIRST thing that you will notice about Olga Kabo as you speak to her is her radiant smile and the second thing, of course, are her sparkling captivating eyes. It is no wonder that she cast a spell everywhere she went during the course of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. Presenting Olga Kabo in her most candid mood with Amit R Agarwal:
AA: First of all complements on your beautiful smile? OK: (blushes) Thanks.
AA: What role are you playing in ’Longing For The Future’? OK: I played the role of older Nastasya – the female protagonist. The film travelled through 20 years of the love-life of a couple. I played the lead role after 20 years in her life. It was quite demanding to play such a role as it is quite emotional and the female protagonist has undergone lots of suffering. AA: How long have you been acting and did you have any formal training in acting? OK: I started acting very early, when I was just 15 years old. Today, it’s been 25 years for me in cinema and I have made 50 films. Each film is distinct and appeals in its own right! I took training in acting from Moscow. I did some of my early works with the famed Sirke Bondarchuk. I performed in a lot of theatre and also starred in a lot of Shakespearean plays. AA: In this 25 years of your cinematic journey which is your best role and why? OK: (ponders for a while and laughs lightly) Ah! It has to be ’Cyrano de Bergerac’ by Roston. I played the part of Roksan. The role was quite challenging as it involved a lot of emotions and the graph of the role was quite complex. AA: Any other films that you enjoyed making? OK: Of course, there was this action movie called ’Crusader’. It was quite interesting to make, particularly, because I did all my stunts myself. In fact, the Russian film-industry fondly referred to me as the stunt-woman (chuckles). AA: What is your take on female nudity in cinema? OK: I guess, it really depends on the role. There are very many roles that are not possible without being nude; as long as the role demands it and the nudity is dealt with in an aesthetic, artistic form, I have no problems with it. AA: Have you watched any Hindi films? OK: Of course, I remember watching ’Seeta Aur Geeta’ and ’Sholay’. In fact, I am a very big fan of Amitabh Bachchan and Raj Kapoor. I think Bachchan has an amazing personality. AA: Lastly, how’s Goa treating you? OK: In the best possible manner (smiles). The people here are very hospitable and I am getting the taste of the famed Indian hospitality. We are really enjoying the sun, the sand and the beaches. I am really looking forward to come back to India soon (and she again flashes her smile).
