Impact of Citizen Journalism: School gets teacher after 5 years
There was a school. There were students. But there was no teacher. For 5 years, the school remained as a symbol of apathy both by Govt. and society, till one day a citizen journalist decides to report it on camera. The video caught attention of many and the school soon saw teachers coming in.

>Whenever we think of a school, the first thing that we associate with it is the teachers in the school. But can you imagine a school without teachers? This was the situation faced by a government school in Satsama village, Redhakhola Block, District Sambhalpur, Odisha. This school was started in 2008 and till 2013, there was no teacher in the school. The school, only had a head master who managed all the work.

Mamta Patra, a citizen journalist reported the issue on India Unheard, as a community correspondent. Her report managed manged to bring teachers to the only govt school in the area an hopes for  the underprivileged students of Satsama High school. The students over there were waiting for someone who will hold the key for their bright future.

This school is the only government primary and high school for that area, and children from around 5000 families across seven to eight villages, depends on this singal school. The strength of the school is around 120, but the bad part was they did not have even a singal teacher to teach them. Every student was studying by their own till 2012. The headmaster managed to depute two teachers for two days of the week and those teachers used to complete the whole months curriculum in few hours. The quality of education was bad, and only thirteen students from the school have managed to pass the metric.

"The students over there, specially the high school students were very much concerned about their future, they were eager to achieve something big in their life, but were very nervous about their upcoming board exams. They all were waiting for someone who will teach them, guide them and lead them towards a brighter future. And finally they could achieve it", says an excited Mamta Patra over the phone.

In 2012, when Mamta Patra, came to know about the situation in the school, she made a video coverage, about the lack of teachers in the school with the complete support of the students and head master of that school in November 2012. she talked to many officials, who could handle the matter. Finally in late January, she was actually succeed in her mission, as four new teachers were appointed in that school.

So how does she feel at the success? “Appointment of four teachers in the Satsama High School because of a video I made gives me immense confidence to carry on my work as a Community Correspondent. Watch out I’ll be making many more impact videos”, says a exuberant Mamta.
