FOR THE first time in Lucknow, you can now get the famous kakori kebab over the counter and along with mutton and chicken seekh kebabs too. Priced at Rs 5 a kebab, it is reasonably cheap. Available in the evening at the famous eating market of Akbari Gate in the old city, the kakori kebab is already doing brisk business.

Imran Quereshi, the young man who is the proprietor of this new hotel or barbeque joint has a multifaceted track record. He is not just a kebab maker, he is a kebab eater too and therefore knows what his customer wants.

How’s the taste? He asks his customers in English and they are impressed. Quereshi comes from a family that calls itself Avadhi chefs. His kebabs are served with mint sauce and onions and the romali rotis are available in plenty nearby, as during the holy month of Ramadan the Akbari Gate area becomes an eating market, which remains open till late at night.

In the first impression Quereshi or Imran Bhai strikes you as a bodybuilder but he scoffs at the idea of going to a gym and going ‘English Exercises’.

“I am a wrestler and I go to an Akhara,” he says.

But one does not have to wrestle with Imran’s Kebabs, they simply dissolve in your mouth and the taste is mouthwatering too.But not many are aware of Imran's extraordinary skills, had he been in any other part of the country like Delhi or Mumbai, this Lucknow lad would have been raking in millions, but in Lucknow where almost everyone is a kebab maker and eater, his talent seems to be lost in the crowd. However, for the people of Lucknow, Ramadan provides an opportunity to go out with friends and guests and get them to see the night life of the city of nawabs and kebabs.

In this city, to survive you have to be either a nawab or a kebab. The range of kebabs is many at Akbari gate, you have the famous Tunday kebab here and his sheermal and paranthans. You have the famous boti kebab and the pasanda kebab and what have you even chicken liver kebabs, what more can you ask for and if you go during the time of Taravi in the evening the streets are deserted and you can have Imran’s undivided attention.
