In citizen journalism one requires insights into literacy and basic writing skills to do a reasonable job
Some news portals, TV channels, blogs, YouTube, SlideShare and specific websites had been encouraging the users and audiences to contribute local analytical news stories and informative articles.

Some serious citizen journalists have come up who generate content in various topical and interesting subjects for sharing with others including the news about themselves, their locality, profession, organization or their interest area.

In a way, citizen journalism is the act of citizens in the process of collecting, reporting, analyzing and disseminating news and information for sharing through various media. One can do it with media literacy and writing skills.

According to Shayne Bowman and Chris Willis, "The intent of this participation is to provide independent, reliable, accurate, wide-ranging and relevant information that a democracy requires." In other words, citizen journalism is a specific form of citizen media with the user generated content.

It does not require any professional journalism training but makes modern technology and the global distribution on the Internet to share news, ideas and information. One can analyse or critically examine or fact-check a newspaper article or news items from the mainstream media and point out bias in it.

In citizen journalism, one can share digital photo of a newsworthy event happening in one's town and post it online. Or one can videotape some event and post it on a site such as YouTube or Slideshare as well as send to TV channel.

Thus, in a citizen journalist is a common citizen with basic cognitive skills and writing flavor who can capture news; shape its future by distributing it freely and globally.

In a nutshell, citizen journalism is related to an active role of citizens in the process of collecting, reporting, analyzing and disseminating news and information globally through internet.
