In reality women have proved themselves superior to men
In a controversial remark, the Kerala priest A P Aboobacker Musliar described as "un-Islamic" the concept of gender equality and said that women could never equal men as they are fit only to deliver children".

The priest Musliar, the chief of All India Sunni Jamiyyathul Ulama, said women have no mental strength and the power to control the universe, "which lies in the hands of men." He wondered if there was even a single woman among thousands of cardiac surgeons.

Referring to the ongoing debates over allowing girls and boys to share seats in colleges, Musliar said it was "part of a calculated move to destroy Islam and culture."

I'm not a religious scholar and I've no desire to engage in a fruitless debate that would never end on an agreement. However, being a practicing Muslim, I feel compelled to respond to this outrageous statement and put my point of view. The religion Islam as I learned advocates the basic equality between the sexes. According to the Holy Qur'an, our Allah Almighty created man and woman from a single source and origin:

"O Mankind, Be dutiful to your Lord who created you from a single soul and from it created its mate (of same kind) and from them twain has spread a multitude of men and women"………. An-Nisa, 4:1

He (God) it is who did create you from a single soul and there from did create his mate, that he might dwell with her (in love)……Al-A'raf, 7:189

"And Allah has made for you azwaj (mates or wives) of your own kind, and has made for you from your mates, children and grandchildren, and has made provision of good things for you. Do they then disbelieve in false deities and deny the favor of Allah?"……An-Nahl, 16::72

God has created men and women from one origin and one entity. Neither of them can claim superiority over each other. They have been created from the same source and so their essence is the same. This is reinforced in the Qur'an many times so as to ensure mankind is aware that both are equal in the eyes of God.

In the pre-Islamic period women were seen as mere objects for the fulfillment of male desire or reserved for the procreation of the human race. Other than this, women were neither respected nor considered equal to their male counterparts. In the pre-Islamic Arabia the baby girls were buried alive by the Arabs who felt shame and humiliation if a girl was born. The religion of Islam declared woman to be the equal of man and gave her the status of an essential part of the society, indispensable to man, honored, revered and to be respected by all.

There is an interesting story in the genesis of Islam. The day, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) received the first divine revelation from Almighty Allah, the first human he shared the revelation was Hazrart Khadeeja. The Prophet was naturally surprised with the new status God had ordained upon him. Naturally, he immediately consulted his wife.

Hazrat Khadeeja placated him and consoled him with gentle words. She reassured the Holy Prophet (PBUH) that he had never done a wrong in his life, had always helped the poor and needy, been kind to the orphans and widows and always gave financial help to those in debt, anything that could happen to him could only be the truth and right. Thus from the very inception of Islam, women have played a pivotal role in its birth to its expansion.

The religion of Islam considers men and women as equals and a key element in Islamic thinking is that men and women are not considered each other's adversaries. They are not in competition with each other and there is no concept of the 'battle of the sexes'. Instead they are considered partners in life. They are the source of peace and contentment for each other. They are supposed to compliment and assist each other. They both have different roles to adjust in real life which are integral to the foundations of society.

According to great scholars of Islam - Men and women are equal in status, equal as human beings, as individuals in their own right, but they are considered to be fundamentally different from each other, both physically and emotionally, thus in the context of rights and duties they have equal rights but their rights reflect their differing personalities.

The Holy Qur'an states: "Andthe male is not like the female"….Al-Imran, 3:36

According to the Holy Traditions of Prophet (PBUH) - Once the Holy Prophet (saw) was asked by a Companion who is entitled to be treated the best by him? The Holy Prophet replied "your mother". The companion asked and after that? The Holy Prophet replied "your mother". The Companion again asked and after that? He replied "your mother". Only after being questioned the fourth time did the Holy Prophet reply "your father". (Sahih Bukhari - kitab-al-adab).

The evils of society are Universal Constants and NUDITY in any form is one of them. I'm willing to look the other side if a sight is offensive but it doesn't make that sight respectable or acceptable. In the name of liberation, modernity and empowerment of WOMAN, not only the weaker women of the world were exploited but the so-called stronger women accepted their role as inferior to men. And here I would cite some examples of intellectual of fair sex who accepted that they were not equal.

Few years ago, the famous author of 'Harry Potter series' wrote a book 'The Cuckoo's Calling.' Instead of her usual name - JK Rowling, a new name 'Richard Galbraith' appeared on the cover of the novel. It was discovered by UK's Sunday Time. She supported her decision of adopting the new masculine pseudonym saying that being Robert Galbraith has been a liberating experience.

When she had written 'Harry Potter series,' she had stated that her publisher - 'Bloomsbury,' had told her to use the initials 'JK' instead of the real name Joanne Kathleen Rowling. She condescended to the idea that the female name was not going to be acceptable to boys. The aim was to keep her name gender neutral to attract mass audience. Who should take the blame of duplicity?

Another famous best seller of year 2012 was - 'City Of Dark Magic.' The name of author appeared as Magnus Flyte. It was discovered that the book was written by two women, Christina Lynch and Meg Howrey. Why the compromise for name was made?

The famous American science fiction writer James Tiptree Jr., the creator of 'Ten Thousand Light-Years from Home' was actually Madam Alice Sheldon.

On a personal note - I feel women are superior to men as they are more honest, affectionate and loyal as mothers, sisters, wives, friends and daughters. Statistically, women live longer on average. Women deal better with stress. Women perform better in school. Women are better advertised and thus better paid in that particular industry.
