IN A shameful incident, a Tamil Nadu based daily wager was on Friday evening arrested for ‘selling’ his daughter for Rs 40,000. The one-month-old baby girl was sold a month back to a Mumbai-based business man. When arrested, the man identified as J Syed Yousuff stated that he had no means of looking after his family comprising of five members, which is why he had to resort to such a step.
With that money, he looked forward to cover his family’s expenses but could not as his wife complained to the village administrative officer about the step, who then informed the police. Yousuff had recently lost his job after getting into a drunken brawl with the owner of the tea shop, where he used to work.
In a statement recorded by Yousuff’s wife Fathima, she said that he had convinced her to sell their daughter, who was the third born over a month ago. She explained that according to Yousuff that is the only way to cover the expenses of the house but it did not quite work out so as he used to spend most of the money in drinking alcohol.
