Increase power generation from Tehri Dam to avoid spillage
The generation at Tehri Dam project must be increased and water storage level be allowed to 530 meters to avoid impending spillage from Tehri Dam. All India Power Engineers Federation has written to the Prime Minister to allow reservoir filling level at least up to 530 meters against the present state government's restriction of 525 meters.

Tehri Dam has a full reservoir level of 830 meters  while maximum level is 835 meters. Under flood conditions if level crosses 830.2 meters then the un gated shaft spillways operate as these have the opening at 830.2 whereas the dam has the capacity to absorb flood up to 835 meters.

The present day restriction of reservoir filling to 825 meters  has serious implications because the present trend indicates that the level of 825 may  be crossed after mid-August. In that case Tehri spillway will have to be opened to prevent further rise.

It also means that the most useful storage portion of 5 meters between 825 and 830 meters will be denied to the nation with loss of irrigation and power potential. The present trend of increase in level shows that there is acute risk of Dam reaching the spill level as the present level is 812.55 meters on July 31.

The project authorities must  increase the power generation  from 1000MW to 1100 MW since Tehri units have 10 % continuous overload capacity. With 10% extra generation the chances of spillage will correspondingly reduce
