The celebrations of Independence Day at Doda included cultural events, the unfurling of the tricolour and the speech given by J&K's tourism minister, Nawang Rigzin Jora. However, decorum and tourism development packages for Doda were sorely missed
DODA CELEBRATED the 63rd Independence Day with traditional enthusiasm at the Sports Stadium. Nawang Rigzin Jora, the tourism minister of the state, unfurled the national tricolour and took salute of the march past. Students from different government schools and private educational institutions presented cultural programmes, which were presented by the students of different government and private educational institutions.
The minister praised former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and the achievements of many tehsils in the state as part of his Independence speech. However, many people were disappointed as he did not announce any new tourism development package for the district, as they had expected. The absence of the district's MLA and its recently inducted MLC Khalid Najib Suhrwardy was also felt keenly by the gathering, who were expecting their representatives with them on the auspicious occasion.
There was some confusion about the arrangement too, when the President of Doda municipality left the programme after he did not find any chair reserved for him. He later presented a memorandum of his displeasure over this mismanagement. It has been generally observed, especially after 2002 elections that the workers of the Doda MLA always try to mark their presence in large numbers on all occasions and government functions only to dominate their political rivals, for which they occupy the seats quite early at the venues of functions. It has become a fashion now a days that low profile political workers or party functionaries of coalition expect VVIP treatment, which is not possible for the Administration to provide to every now and then.
