THIS IS it for 2009 folks!
We are hence concluding 2009 in the same state as we entered it. The year started amidst residues of 26/11 tragedy and lumpy traces of global recession.
Starting with the spicy relationship with Pakistan, this year saw some success for India in mending Pakistan strategy. Although keeping all-options open strategy of Pranab Mukherjee failed, Manmohan singh’s ‘Via Washington’ tactic worked. The ‘credible evidence’ tactic of Islamabad too was cracked via-Washington route. At a ‘diplomatic’ gun point, Pakistan admitted that 26/11 attack was plotted in its territories. There was a special appearance of Richard Holbrooke; who received bashes from Indian polity for commenting on Kashmir issue.
This year saw a rise in ‘Indo-American’ relations. In this aspect, Hilary Clinton needs a special mention. Thanks to our obsession for America, we continued to oppose Iran’s nuclear plans at every possible global stage. Although Iran is an age-old ally of New Delhi, we managed to change our mindset.
‘Indo-China cold war’ continued this year too; thanks to the media who succeeded in installing insecurity on both sides. Our traditional ties with Russia continued with a dotted contribution by ‘Tour de Moscow’ initiative of Pratibha Patil towards the end of this year.
Israel continued its co-operation with New Delhi annoying the Muslims of India. Gulf suffered a financial setback and hence exported thousands of Indian labours working there.
We continued to ignore the African and developing world as if we were an existent superpower. Indian cricket team made it to the top spot of International Cricket Council (ICC) ranking although there was not much change in our bottom spot in global nutritional index.
Pokhran continue to poke the Indian claim for the nuclear power status but still managed to make the world rethink about the issue.
Concluding the year and article; every Indian today feels proud to take the credit for the successes while for the debacles we are still delighted to bash Indian polity. After all, 2009 failed to change us too!
