India celebrates Eid-ul-Fitr today
Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the culmination of the fasting month of Ramadaan, is celebrated across India today.

The announcement came following a meeting of Qadeem Royat Hilal committee headed by Maulana Mufti Mohammed Mukkaram, Shahi Imam of Fatehpuri Masjid, as the moon was sighted in many parts of the country on Monday. Eid prayers were offered this morning at Eidgahs or open grounds and the mosques.

The country's President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have extended their greetings to fellow citizens on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh also wished Eid Mubarak and hoped for happiness, peace and prosperity in the country on this auspicious day. He tweeted saying:

Ramadan is the ninth of 12 months in the Islamic calendar. The month honours the Angel Gabriel's revelation of the Quran, the holy scripture of Islam, to the Prophet Mohammed at a meditation retreat in a cave about 1,400 years ago.

During Ramadan, Muslims offer special prayers called Taraweeh at the end of their usual five-time prayers. It lasts for 29 or 30 days and culminates in the Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, and Muslim across the world make every effort to be more spiritual. They abstain from food, drink and other pleasures from sunrise to sunset.
