India celebrates its National Sports Day, pays rich tributes to hokey legend Major Dhyan Chand
The National Sports Day was celebrated on 29 August to mark the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand, the hockey player who won gold medals in Olympics for India in hockey in three editions and scored several hundred goals in his sporting career.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi while paying tributes to the wizard of hockey and urging people to prioritise sports and fitness in their lives tweeted thus: "@narendramodi Greetings to all sports enthusiasts on National Sports Day. Tributes to the phenomenal hockey player, Major Dhyan Chand Ji on his birth anniversary.I urge people to give priority to sports and fitness related activities, which will contribute towards a healthier India."

However, another event of the day, the function conferring  Arjuna and Khel Ratna awards by the President Ram Nath Kovind of India has been postponed to September 25 in order to enable Indian athletes to return from Asian Games 2018 taking place in Indonesia this time.

Sachin Tendulkar @sachin_rt tweeted, "Today, and every day going forward, let us make sport a way of life. There can be no better way to celebrate our #NationalSportsDay. #SportPLAYINGIndia"

Also, Union Minister Col Rajyavardhan Rathore tweeted, "Today, we commemorate Major Dhyan Chand's Birth Anniversary as #NationalSportsDay. Let us give our tributes to one of India's greatest sports icons by inculcating sports as part of our lifestyle."
