India celebrates National Mathematics Day, Ramanujan's mathematical contributions remembered
National Mathematics Day got celebrated across the country on December 22 with conferences, symposia, discussions, talks, exhibitions, and workshops and similar other events.

In Delhi, a conference on math education by the NCERT paid tributes to the Indian mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan (22 Dec 1887- 26 Apr 1920) as well as at Ramanujan Math Park at Kuppam in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.

It was in 2012, that the Indian government declared 22 December to be National Mathematics Day to mark the 125th anniversary of the birth of Ramanujan and declared the year as National Mathematics Year with the events throughout the country.

Ramanujan FRS, despite very little formal training in pure mathematics, had made 'substantial contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions including solutions to mathematical problems considered to be unsolvable'.

Ramanujan initially developed his own mathematical research in isolation of the larger body of knowledge. His work got noticed when he began a 'postal partnership with the English mathematician G. H. Hardy at the University of Cambridge, England'. Who found his work extraordinary  and invite him (Ramanujan)  to Cambridge to share and further the mathematical research.

One gets really surprised to know that he independently compiled nearly 3,900 results related mostly to 'identities and equations' which have been named after him such as  the Ramanujan prime and the Ramanujan theta function which led to a large amount of further research.

His discoveries in mathematics were deemed extraordinary and he is held as a person of exemplary mathematical-logical intelligence.  Some of his discoveries and formulas are said to be helpful to cosmologists to explore the dark secrets of the universe.
