A recent online survey by a travel company has revealed that Japan is the most holiday-deprived country in the world, and surprisingly, India stands at the fourth position when it comes to taking holidays.
IN INDIA there is a saying, “work is worship”, which means work is everything or something to be treated with honor. Going by a recent survey, more young people are following this dictum – very much against the country’s much-maligned image of a nation that’s on holiday intermittently due to various festivals and gazetted and non-gazetted government holidays.
The travel company’s online survey, in which Japan emerged as the most holiday-deprived nation for the second consecutive year with an average 9 days annual leave, was aimed to know which country’s population is lacking behind in taking holidays or using holidays provided to an employee by employers. According to this survey an Indian employee is given 26 holidays in a year on an average basis. Of these, only 22 holidays are utilized by an employee. What's more 35 per cent of people use only 15 out of 26 holidays given to them.
About 22 per cent people surveyed said that their superiors don’t allow them to take holidays, and 18 per cent said their partner was unable to get holidays at the same time of the other partner. The trend in Europe and even in the US is that most companies give 3-4 weeks of leave during Christmas i.e. 15-20 days of mandatory leave - not counting weekends. So it seems in terms of taking holidays we are nearing the ‘Western’ standard. India’s ranking in the survey is both - good news as well as not so good news. Due to an economy that’s going great guns more young people are throwing themselves at work. Given that they are taking less holidays, it seems they are in a hurry because they want instant progress or achievements and for achieving instant progress they are throwing themselves at work. This can create health issues and burnout, resulting in more employee turnover and in the long term lesss number of holidays taken can increase stress levels and lower productivity. The good news is that India is ranked fourth in the list of workaholic countries. This means there are countries that are more workaholic than India. In the survey the first second and third places were taken by Japan, America and Australia respectively. All the above facts and figures indicate that we might be known as a nation that takes many holidays - especially those working for the government. But if the survey shows that we as a working population are taking less holidays due to any reason – then this is good for the country, which requires all the effort it can garner from its young population to increase it productivity.
