On the occasion of the death anniversary of India's youngest Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the nation paid tribute by organising various events, activities to spread his message.
MAY 21 was the 20th death anniversary of India’s youngest Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. On this day in 1991 at Sriperambudur, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by LTTE, when he was going to address a public gathering before the polls.
The first ones to pay the homage to this young leader were his wife Sonia Gandhi, President Prathibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at “Veer Bhoomi” in New Delhi.His son, Rahul Gandhi, daughter Priyanka Gandhi, son-in-law Robert Vadra were also present along with Vice President Hamid Ansari and Home Minister P.Chidambaram along with Chief Minister of Delhi, Shiela Dikshit .
Rajiv Gandhi who was reluctant to join the politics, was pursuing his career with Indian Airlines as a pilot had to enter politics when his mother, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, asked him to join her after the death of her younger son Sanjay Gandhi in a plane crash.After coming to the power, he rode a wave of national enthusiasm as people expected a young leader to deliver. Rajiv Gandhi is known as visionary of 21st century India. He very famously said at a joint session of US and India that “ I am young and I too have a dream. I have a dream of an India strong independent, self reliant and in the forefront of the front ranks of the nations of the world in the service of mankind”.Rajiv Gandhi was a youth icon and was very different from the professional politicians whom public despises. Rajiv Gandhi brought transparency and was determined to bring change, he supported liberalisation, technology, modernity and he was quite determined to move India into the 21st century.May 21 is observed as Anti –Terrorism Day to create awareness about this menace. Throughout the country many activities are organised by voluntary organizations to mark this day such as cultural programs, debates, discussions, musicals to educate the people and pass the message of Rajiv Gandhi, highlighting the ill effects of the violence.
