ACCORDING TO a statement issued by the Indian government, from now onwards there will be a reservation of 50 per cent seats for the women in the Urban Local Bodies or ULBs.
Though the move has brought smiles to the women rights activists but the productivity of the move is still in doubt. Only the future proceedings will define the real aim of this already lauded bold move by the government.
The Ministry of Urban Development will move a bill for a constitutional amendment in the next parliamentary session, to increase the reservation from the present 33 per cent to 50, it said.
Besides, it will also apply to seats and offices reserved for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. As of now, women account for 43.5 per cent of the urban population of India. Earlier, in August, the government had approved 50 per cent reservation of seats in village councils.
