India should consider advantages of gay marriage from the West
Their are many controversies around the issue of gay marriage or same 'sex marriage'. The Indian federal government has not recognized gay marriage as legal - though it has de-criminalized sex between people of the same sex. There are several countries that do recognize gay marriage and are dealing with its advantages and disadvantages. Shouldn't the Indian government also re-think giving full rights of a conventional marriage to gay couples?

MARRIAGE IS universally acknowledged as a legal contract between a man and a woman, and is tied up with emotions, sexual fidelity, and child rearing. It is a moral issue, and redefining or changing such moral issues is as good as redefining the morals. But the question is, will gay marriage change the meaning of marriage?

In 21st century legalization of gay marriages has triggered a broad national debate. People of the same sex who love each other are demanding the right to celebrate their commitment, and they also want the same benefits of marriage as a normal marriage has in a country. But there are many pros and cons related to this issue.

The advantages of legalizing gay marriages are, it increases the state revenue because revenue from gay people marrying emenates from marriage licenses, higher income taxes. A marriage should provide both physical and psychological health benefits, and researchers say that refusing same sex marriages has resulted in harmful psychological affects. Legalizing gay marriage will not harm a heterosexual marriage, and divorce and abortion rates will decrease. The US state of Massachusetts, the first state to legalize gay marriage in the US, has reported the least number of divorce cases.

However, there are many disadvantages associated with legalizing gay marriage. The institution of marriage is already threatened with high divorce rates, and allowing same-sex marriages can further weaken the institution. This may further give way to polygamous, incestuous, bestial, and other non-traditional relationships. Many religious and ethical beliefs are associated with marriage and these beliefs will get disturbed with gay marriage. There are many such disadvantages, which are associated with gay marriage.

In countries like Australia gay marriages are a major political agenda. The government in Australia provides a legal re-organization to such relationships, and has put in place many reforms that provide entitlements for gay couples in areas such as social security, employment, taxation, immigration, taxation and workers compensation. Some other countries that are also thinking on the same lines are Netherland, Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway, Sweden and Portugal, reported yahoo. However, the difference between the treatment of a gay marriage and a normal marriage still exists across the world.
