“BENEATH THE helmet, under that unruly curly hair, inside the cranium, there is something we don't know, something beyond scientific measure. Something that allows him to soar, to roam a territory of sport that, forget us, even those who are gifted enough to play alongside him cannot even fathom. When he goes out to bat, people switch on their television sets and switch off their lives”.
A major news channel on Sachin Tendulkar.
Once again Sachin lived up to his reputation, record books were once again browsed and re-written yesterday at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium, Gwalior.
India’s one of the most loved son Sachin Tendulkar,a name synonymous to milestones etched another world record. By scoring double century against South Africa in the second ODI of the three match series, he became only the first man in the history of ODI cricket to do so, in the course he also surpassed 194 run highest ODI score, scored by Syed Anwar of Pakistan and Charles Coventry of Zimbabwe.
Jam pack Roop Singh stadium saw Sachin carving one of the most awaited records in the history of ODI, since its beginning in 1971 ODI had never seen any batsman scoring double hundred. In his record breaking inning Sachin played 147 balls and hit 25 mesmerizing fours and three towering sixes.
In his great inning he gave little chance to any South African bowler and hammered bowling to all parts of the ground. He was given standing ovation by the ecstatic crowd on reaching milestone figure of 200.
Leveraging on Sachin’s magnificent record breaking inning India scored a mammoth total of 401 runs losing only 3 wickets in their allotted 50 overs. Indian inning also saw some quick fire work from Dinesh Karthik and Yousuf Pathan, at the end of the inning captain MS Dhoni hammered ball brutally and scored brisk 68. While Karthik and Yousuf Pathan scored 79 and 36 respectively.
Although experts say nothing is impossible in cricket, but chasing a mammoth score of 401 was never easy for the Proteas. They were under pressure of scoring 8 runs a over right from the start of their inning and lost wickets at regular interval. Only AB De Villiers showed some resilience, he scored 114 runs but lack of support from other batsman left his inning in oblivion. And South Africa lost the match by a huge margin of 153 runs, the result also gave India an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the three match series.
Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil too joined the people in the euphoria created by Sachin’s historic double hundred. They have congratulated him on achieving rare feet. Greetings are also pouring in from other stalwarts of the game from across the world.
Considering Sachin’s contribution in the game it will be a fitting reply to the genius, if government of India confers him with the nation’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna.
