TWO EXTREMES are noticed in the Indian scenario. At one side there are high sky rises and concrete jungle that promises all the luxuries of our time. People are sophisticated, educated and expected to be broad minded as education helps to broaden the horizon of the mind. On the other side there are villages in India that have no electricity and people do not know that Facebook exists. Here beliefs, superstition and the unknown are feared and understood as education is not the common practise. There is a middle strata that is caught in between education and beliefs and these people face difficulty as they do not know what to emrace. Crimes and heinous things happen due to the uncertainty and an example of the same happened when a woman set herself and her two daughters on fire due to superstition.
One hardly expects people in the metros to be a prey of superstition. But this is what precisely happened when in Jahangirpuri of North Delhi Romila waited for her husband Dinesh Kumar to go out for work. After which the woman took her two daughters Jaya, 5, and Geeta 3 inside a room and sprinkled them with kerosene to light a fire. With the girls the woman set herself on fire as well. As this is a mass suicide, hence no police case was filed. While both Romila and Jaya succumbed to their injuries on discovery, Geeta fought with 80 percent burnt. But the little girl could not make it at the end.
The neighbours came to know of the matter after they saw fire coming out of the house. When questioned they said that Romila has been complaining of some superstitious things recently. She used to talk about supernatural phenomenon. The police after investigating have seen that it was case of suicide fuelled by some belief and hence no police case was registered.
It is sad that even at the time of rapid development the level of awareness is so low. People still fall prey to their traditional beliefs and have no hope. The loss of the hope is the final point that leads anyone to end their life and to do so to small kids just show how helpless the mother must have felt at the time.
