INDIA SUCCESSFULLY test-fired the supersonic cruise missile BrahMos from the Integrated Test Range of Chandipur in Balasore today. According to the reports, the supersonic cruise missile BrahMos blasted off at around 11 am from a mobile launcher near Balasore town.
The BrahMos missile is capable of carrying conventional warheads up to 200-300 kg and has a range of 290 km., jointly developed by India's Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroeyenia. The BrahMos missile is named after the two important river of both the country, Brahmaputra and Moskva.
The 8.4 meter-long supersonic cruise missile BrahMos is capable of being launched from multiple platforms like submarine, ship, aircraft and landbased Mobile Autonomous Launchers and can fly at 2.8 times the speed of sound. The BrahMos missile has two-stage integrated Rocket/Ramjet engine.
The missile was last successfully tested at a supersonic speed in a steep-dive mode on September 5 at Chandipur in Orissa coast. From 2005, Indian navy has begun inducting the first version of Brahmos missile system in all its frontline war ships.
Ahead of the test, local administration temporarily shifted 3,220 people as a safety measure to nearby shelter centers, who living within the two-km radius from the launch pad.
