India to celebrate no-tobacco week
Week-long activities have been planned in various states of India to end on May 31 with the celebration of World No Tobacco Day (WNTD), informs various media sources.

The purpose is to organize some tobacco control programmes and activities with vulnerable sections of society to wean them away from smoking and tobacco consumption and help them to make a shift towards healthy life.

National no-tobacco week in India is deemed an important event to impart public health education and highlight the dangers of smoking and help people quit smoking. Also, the events of the week will promote the right of individuals to breathe air unpolluted by tobacco smoke.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the theme of this year's WNTD is 'Raise tobacco taxes, reduce consumption and save lives' for denormalizing the tobacco industry and its marketing practices, products and tobacco use by raising taxes on them.

At the global level, WHO will be coordinating various WNTD events to highlight the public health hazards of tobacco. For this year’s WNTD, the WHO has released the poster titled "Raise tobacco tax" for its worldwide campaign.

On the occasion of WNTD, WHO has urged various national governments and the world community to increase taxes on tobacco to levels that reduce tobacco consumption by making them out of reach of common people.
