IT WAS Harbhajan Singh's magic that worked and host South Africa lost two wickets just for 52 runs at stumps in their second inning on the third day in the third cricket test at Newlands, Cape Town. Harbhajan Singh claimed two quick wickets of captain Graeme Smith and night watchman Paul Harris in two consecutive overs at the cost of just four runs in the last minutes of play on day 3.
Earlier, on day three at Newlands, Sachin Tendulkar anchored India's innings with his 51st test century. Sachin reached his second century of the series from 213 balls, with 12 fours and one six. He added one more feather to his cap and became the first batsman to complete a hundred with a sixer, for the sixth time, extending his record. It was his 29th test hundreds away from home, is also a record.
Earlier, on day three at Newlands, Cape Town, India resumed their inning from 142/2 in 50 overs. Overnight batsmen Gautam Gambhir (65) and Sachin (49) started well and took team's total to 200 runs. Gambhir, who was in good touch with bat, missed his hundred by seven runs. Paul Harris picked his wicket at 204 runs on board. Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar shared fine stand of 176 runs.
For the seventh wicket Sachin and Harbhajan were involved in a stand of 76 runs, India's highest at Newlands. They surpassed the earlier record of 75 runs between Sachin and Kapil Dev in January 1993. Harbhajan scored 40 runs. He also became the third Indian all-rounder to complete the double of 2,000 runs and 300 wickets after Kapil Dev and Anil Kumble.
Sachin returned to the pavilion as the eighth Indian wicket, when a ball from Morne Morkel trimmed his off bail. During his 146 runs inning, Sachin faced 314 balls with 17 fours and two sixes. Indian team took a slight lead of two runs and all out for 364 runs.
World no.1 test bowler Dale Styen picked five wickets for 75 runs, whereas Morkel and Harris claimed two and one wicket respectively.
