Selectors picked the team cautiously and relied heavily on tried and tested players, but surprised everyone by picking two rookies. The two new fortunate names in the squad are Karnataka seamer Abhimanyu Mithun and West Bengal stumper Wriddhiman Saha. Here is the complete list of team Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Murali Vijay, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, S Badrinath, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (C and keeper), Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra, Sudeep Tyagi, Pragyan Ojha, Abhimanyu Mithun, Wriddhiman Saha.
On Rahul’s omission, chief selector Srikant said he is still recuperating from injury and he would be considered for the second test provided he clears fitness test.
The 15-member squad includes six pure batsman, three spinners, four pacers and two stumpers. With two middle order prolific batsmen out of squad, it will be master blaster Sachin Tendulkar and seasoned and elegant VVS Laxman, who are expected to handle the baton in the middle order, whereas two Delhi batsman Gambhir and Sehwag will once again play as opening pair.
During the tour Proteas would play two test matches and three ODIs, first test match would be played at Nagpar, between February 6 and 10, while second would be played at historic Eden Garden, Kolkata from February 14 to 18.
Series against Proteas is the true litmus test for the men in blue; it would not be easy to beat them even though we will be at our home.
