INDIAN BATSMEN plundered the Sri Lankan attack on the first day of second test match at Kanpur as the scorecard at the draw of stumps read 417 for 2 wickets. The huge India score on the first day itself was due to excellent batting by openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, both of whom scored big centuries.

Taking advantage of the placid Kanpur pitch, which offered no help to the bowlers, both Sehwag and Gambhir fired all cylinders and made 131 and 167 respectively before giving away their wickets. Gambhir was the star of the day as he played an inning, which was studded with brilliant hits to all parts of the ground.

Sehwag, who was dropped in the slips proved why he is a such a dangerous customer as he slaughtered the Lankan attack in the second hour of the match after playing sedately for the first few overs. The dashing batsman was on a roll before he fell to a Muralitharan delivery, while trying to hit one more to the fence.

His fall brought the evergreen Rahul Dravid to the crease, who also joined the party and played a perfect foil to Gambhir. Dravid along with Sachin Tendulkar, who came after Gambhir was caught and bowled by Muralitharan continued to torment the Lankan bowlers.

Dravid is looking at another century as he is playing on 85 runs, while Tendulkar played at 20 runs as the game came to a close on the first day.
