An officer from the army lauding her success told The Times of India that women are allowed to join the armed forces only as officers in non-combat units. But Tigga has earned the distinction of being the first lady jawan in the 1.3 million strong defence forces. With her impeccable shooting skills and being the best trainee, the officer further stated that she performed exceedingly well in all the physical tests. She took five seconds less than her male counterparts to complete 1.5-km run. She completed the 50-meter run in 12 seconds which is rated as excellent.
However, Tigga’s entry into the army did not happen just by luck. She recalls her journey after she was given a compensatory job by the railways in 2005 after her husband had passed away. She went on to join the railways as a points man in West Bengal. Tigga reminisces that it was while working with the railways she got to know about the Territorial Army and it was her hard work that brought her today where she is.
