Indian arrested in Texas for possessing jihadi material

VIJAY KUMAR, 40, an Indian documentary film-maker was arrested on Friday last at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Texas by the US officials on the grounds of “suspicious behaviour”. The film-maker, who was travelling to America to expose Islamic “terrorism” was apprehended when the authorities found jihadi literature and brass knuckles in his baggage.

As per the local media reports, brass knuckles are banned by the law in Texas and he was booked on a felony charge of possessing a banned weapon in Texas. However, Vijay Kumar was able to explain the possession of jihadi material and a user manual for a handgun. He said that the materials were a part of “educational tools” he had previously used for delivering a lecture at a Hindu organisation on Islamic fundamentalism.

His bail amount was calculated at $50,000, which was later brought down to $5,000. He has already spent a weekend in the jail and his supporters had paid up the amount to bail him out. To make matters worse, a baggage swab meant for explosive residues was used on his baggage that eventually showed negative results.

Apart from the brass knuckles and literary content, the authorities also found $8,000 in cash apart from various other foreign currencies that created more room for suspicion. Kumar's attorney in a statement to the press said that the knuckles he carried was for personal safety as he was scared of being attacked by extremists in the state. The entire episode was a complete misunderstanding by the authorities and the matter will reach a solution when he will be presented in the court on Monday, he added.
