Both of them were trapped inside the burning vehicle as they were unable to open the doors. Fire and rescue personnel from Mylapore were also rushed to the spot and took around half-an-hour to extinguish the fire.
The police were immediately informed by the public present there and a police team from Adyar traffic investigation wing rushed to the spot.
After the fire was put out, the police broke open the car and took the bodies out which were then sent to Royapettah Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The couple was identified with the help of the registration number of the car.
The accident comes barely days after the Chennai police had seized ten luxury cars for racing on the East Coast Road. The police had also arrested one person for allegedly driving over the foot of a police officer.
