Indian hockey legend, Mohammad Shahid passes away
The hockey legend, Mohammed Shahid, passed away today. Considered one of India's greatest hockey players, Shahid was well known for his dribbling skills. He was also a member of the team that won gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

"He breathed his last at 10:45 this morning. It was multiple organ failure that led to his passing away. He will be taken to Varanasi and last rites will be performed there tomorrow," Shahid's son Mohammed Saif told PTI.

Shahid, 56 had been diagnosed with severe liver condition and kidney failure. On 29th June, he was admitted to SSL Hospital at Banaras Hindu University with severe stomach pain. As his health deteriorated, he was flown to New Delhi and admitted at Medanta Medicity hospital, Gurgaon, where he passed away today.

Sports Ministry had announced a medical grant of Rs 10 lakh for him and Railways, his employers, had announced that his medical expenses would be taken care of by them.

Born on April 14, 1960 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Shahid appeared in the international hockey scene at the age of 19 when he played for the junior team in 1979 at the Junior World Cup in France.

In the same year, he was a part of the senior team for a four-nation tournament in Kuala Lumpur under the captaincy of Vasudevan Baskaran. Shahid was the captain during the 1985-86 season. He was also a part of the national team that won a silver medal at the Delhi Asian Games in 1982 and bronze in the Seoul Asiad in 1986. He received the Arjuna Award in 1981 and the Padma Shri in 1986.

The cremation will take place at his native place in Varanasi. His death spelt gloom in the Indian hockey and sports fraternity.
