The marriage ceremony of Princess William and Katherine Middleton generated huge amount of television viewership in India. An estimated 42.1 million people watched the ceremony live. The total market share of English news channels also rose by 15%.
THE BIG surprise was the role of Indian housewives in the jump in viewership. According to television rating agency Audience Measurement and Analytics Ltd (aMap), viewership among housewives catapulted by 25 per cent.
"Viewership among housewives increased as they were glued to the watch every detail of the wedding ceremony, the designer clothing and the grand affair," said Jiniti Shah, vice president, aMap said in a statement, as reported by an Indian newspaper.
Weddings are as it is hugely popular in India. Marriage ceremonies have a soap-opera like auro around them in India, and every little detail is a talking point in Indian weddings. So it was no surprise that millions of Indian housewives sat glued to their television sets in the afternoon - a typical time when housewives watch their local "daughter-in-law and mother-in-law" television serials.
American viewers too contributed to the total viewership of the Kate-Will wedding. Almost 23 million Americans saw the televised wedding. As per the Nielsen Co., a global data analysis consultancy, 22.76 million American television viewers, from more than 11 television networks, watched the proceedings at Westminister Abbey in London.
Many American news websites also recorded a jump in viewership - the highest since the 2008 presidential election. Nevertheless, there's still not an estimate of the worldwide audience that saw the wedding.
