INS ARIHANT, India's first indigenously built nuclear-powered submarine may have been launched on Sunday, July 26, but experts have pointed out that it will take another two years before it will be fully-operational. The 6000-tonne INS Arihant which has been ten years in the making and has cost US$2.9 billion, will require another two years for sea trials as well as trials of its nuclear systems.
The design of INS Arihant, currently docked in the Shipbuilding Centre in Visakhapatnam, is based on the Charlie class nuclear submarine which India had leased from the erstwhile Soviet Union in the late eighties. The INS Arihant is capable of surface speeds ranging from 22 to 28kmph and submerged speeds as high as 44kmph. In the meanwhile, India is to take possession of its first nuclear submarine, the Chakra, later this year. Chakra will be acquired on a ten-year lease from Russia.
The government has given its approval to production of four more nuclear-powered submarines as part of a plan to reinforce the stealth capabilities of the Indian Navy.
