Indian PM Narendra Modi lauds Hassan Rouhani's re-election as Iranian president
The president-elect of Iran, Dr Hassan Rouhani, 68, a moderate cleric who had secured the nuclear deal with world powers in 2015 got about 57 per cent of the votes against 38 per cent for hardliner and conservative cleric Ebrahim Raisi for his thumping victory.

Across Iran, in all major cities and towns including Tehran, there were jubilant scenes as thousands of Rouhani supporters celebrated the leader's victory by taking to the streets, shouting, singing and dancing.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated the President of Iran Hassan Rouhani on his re-election saying, "Heartiest congratulations to my friend, President Hassan Rouhani on his re-election."

"Iran will continue to achieve new heights under the dynamic leadership of President Hassan Rouhani. India remains committed to strengthening our special relationship with Iran,"  added Modi.

"The Iranian people want to live in peace and friendship with the rest of the world, but will not accept any threat or humiliation," Rouhani said on state television after his victory.
