Indian Railways has a total of 32694 level crossings and out of which 14853 are unmanned. The railways carry out various campaigns to educate people about the precautions to be taken while using unmanned level crossings.
INTERNATIONAL LEVEL Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) is being observed today, June 9 by the International Union of Railways (UIC). Indian Railways is also participating in the global mission to create awareness among road users to increase safety at unmanned level crossings.

Indian Railways, the world's fourth largest railway network, has 16 zones in the country. Indian Railways is observing a week-long awareness campaign with an aim to reduce the number of accidents at unmanned crossings. A major cause of concern for the Indian Railways has been the frequent rail accidents at unmanned level crossings.
Indian Railways carries out publicity campaigns through various media including newspaper, TV, Radio to create social awareness on a regular basic to educate road users. Indian Railways also distributes posters, leaflets, various short duration films or advertisement in local languages to educate people about the precautions to be taken while using unmanned level crossings.
In the country Indian Railways has a total of 32694 level crossings, out of which 14853 are unmanned. In the last five years due to the various awareness campaigns and precautions being taken by road users, train accidents at unmanned level crossings, remained at low level.
Every year the International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) focuses on educational measures and the promotion of safe behavior at and around level crossings.
