The day is to be observed to mark the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant who had founded the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and was the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize.

The Indian Red Cross Society is a voluntary humanitarian organization having a large network to provide relief in times of disasters and emergencies and promoting health and care of the vulnerable and marginalized people and communities.

Indian Red Cross Society as usual will observe the day in partnership with St.John Ambulance, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (IFRC), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC ), Multinational firms, as well as various activists.

The day is meant to recommit to the cause of alleviating human suffering along with protecting life and health and to ensure respect for the human being.

Also, it is also re-asserted on this day that the Red Cross is a voluntary service and relief movement without any motive for gain.
