Despite the heroics of Sri Lankan captain Kumara Sangakarra, who played well and made a gritty century, India defeated Sri Lanka by 24 runs to clinch the series 2-0 and also secure the top spot in world test rankings.
Despite the heroics of Sri Lankan captain Kumara Sangakarra, who played well and made a gritty century, India defeated Sri Lanka by 24 runs to clinch the test and series 2-0 and also secure the top spot in world test rankings.
Sangakarra could not continue his resistance on the fifth and final day as he added just 4 runs to his overnight score of 133, before getting caught behind on the howling of Zaheer Khan. Khan bowled an almost perfect line and made crucial breakthroughs paving the way for Indian victory.
Zaheer claimed the wicket of Rangana Herath as he set up a ploy and invoked Herath to pull a short one, which scooped into the hands of Prgayan Ojha at mid-wicket. The next to go on his bowling was Nuwan Kulasekara, who became his fifth victim when he slashed at a rising ball, giving an easy catch to VVS Laxman at second slip. Kulasekara batted well for his 68 balls 19-run resistance.
The last wicket to fall was Muttiah Muralitharan, who was caught by Dhoni off the bowling of Harbhajan Singh.
