DEEPLY PERTURBED by racial attacks, Indian students in Australia will take out a peace rally on Sunday (May 31) to protest against going intolerance in the country.
The rally comes as an expression of the rising anger amongst the one lakh strong Indian students community, which is feeling increasingly insecure down under.
In the last three weeks, at least four incidents of racist violence have been reported, which left one students battling for life, while two others are recuperating for stab and burn injuries respectively.
Federation of India Students in Australia (FISA), which represents Indian students in that country, said that rally will commence from Royal Melbourne hospital and conclude at the Victorian Parliament House.
A candle light vigil will be organised in support of the victims, FISA said, adding that purpose of the rally is to create awareness about racial crimes and promote harmony. FISA has also appealed to all Australians to support the rally.
In a related development, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today called upon the Aussie PM and asked him to take measures to prevent racial crimes.
The racial violence against the Indian students has also provoked Indian superstar Amitabh Bacchan, who also decided on Saturday to say no to a honorary doctorate from an Australian university – Queensland University.
Last weekend, four Indian students were abused and beaten by a group of Aussie teenagers. One of the them Shravan Kumar was stabbed so brutally that he is fighting for his life in hospital.
Later, the houses of these students are also alleged to have been burgled by the same group of attackers.
In a similar attack, an Indian student was stabbed in the stomach, while he kept pleading for his life. In a separate incident, Indian students Rajesh Kumar suffered burn injuries, when a petrol bomb was hurled inside his room.
