Indira Gandhi casts a spell in Kazakhstan
It is a reality in Kazakhstan. A lot of women have the name of our former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi in Kazakhstan. Indiraji left a lasting impression among the people of that country, so much so that quite a few girls were named after her.

INDIRA GANDHI! It’s a name which will churn mixed feelings among those who hear it. Victims of the Emergency will howl, admirers will be well, admirers.

This story takes place, not in India but in Kazakhstan, the world's largest landlocked country, the land of Kazak nomads who were a great threat to Chengiz Khan. The fable starts when Indira Gandhi, visited Kazakhstan along with her father, our first Prime Minister, Nehru in 1955.

In Kazakhstan she was warmly welcomed as though she was the real guest of honour. Frankly speaking she got more attention than PM Nehru. People of Kazak celebrated her arrival with fervour.  What happened after her visit was rather astonishing.

Indiraji left an impression among the people of that country so much so that girls, born between 1980 and 1990, approximately one tenth of them, bear the name ‘Indira’. Indira Mervova, Indira Opesnova, Ospanova Indira are some of the names. In Astana, the main city of Kazakhstan, one of the main woman leader’s name is Indira.

“It was my grandfather who named me ‘Indira’” says Indira Ospanova a five-star hotel employee. “I am really proud to have the name of a world famous leader,” Indira Smalgova, an air hostess of Air Astana, says. One of the main priests of Almati says Indira Gandhi who spent only half a day in the capital along with Nehru left a lasting influence on their lives. The ambassador of India in Kazakhstan says, “The people of Kazak have a hearty relationship with Indians”.
