THE RECENT Mumbai carnage has given rise to a war-like situation between
India and Pakistan. The reasons are no doubt evident but does it justify a war between these two nations, which have been created from a single entity. The two countries were created on a fateful midnight, consequently giving rise to a never-ending conflict, in which common people are the worst sufferers.
The two nations have passed through tumultuous times as a result of headstrong attitudes of the leaders governing the affairs of both the countries. The savagery of war has taken its toll on both sides of the borders but the lesson has not been learnt. War has never been a solution favoured by any sensible person. Even soldiers do not favour war. Celebrated playwright, George Bernard Shaw, centuries ago, had depicted the immortal characters of soldiers who despised war by heart and soul. Many other authors have also written classics deprecating war. Even a man on the street from any of these two countries, if asked, would in unequivocal terms, speak against war. Therefore, it is time that the common people of these two countries are taken into confidence and a solution to the escalating situation is found.
Instances from Germany may be referred to in this context. The Berlin wall fell as a result of strong public opinion in favour of unification of East and West Germany. It is, however, not suggested that the border between India and Pakistan be erased and these nations united. At the contemporary time, there appears no such scope; but it is time that has the final say. Time has brought about drastic transformation in the historical perspective that are beyond human comprehension. So, let time decide what is destined for whom but for now people-to-people contacts may be established between the hoi polloi of these two countries. If a sense of confidence amongst the people could be built, a strong bridge could certainly be constructed for easy mingling of the two people.
With the active support of the people astounding results could be achieved. This task should be shouldered at non-governmental level and the United Nations Organisation -- if it really is an organisation of international community -- can play a pivotal role in bringing about a truly lasting solution for eradicating terrorism from the soil of these two countries, who are mired in a tangle created by distrust and resulting enmity. A war at this time might give rise to a situation graver than that of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the very mention of which brings shiver to the body and mind and therefore, keeping in view the future of posterity, something worthwhile to save these two countries must be done. Let there be an effort towards achieving this goal.
