Indo-Pak tension post Pulwama: Indian diplomacy passed the test with flying colours
India's diplomacy was tested in the aftermath of the Pulwama terror attack. India undertook an airstrike inside Pakistan in the wee hours of 26 February on a JeM terror camp at Balakot, followed by Pakistani offensive on 27 February morning where both India and Pakistan lost one fighter jet each. Both aircrafts crashed inside POK. The Indian pilot was arrested by the Pakistani Army and later released on 1 March 2019.

The Pakistani F-16 pilot Shazaz-ud-Din was first assaulted by a local mob mistaking him for an Indian pilot before being rescued by the Pakistani Army. However, he later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The tension between the two nations has escalated since then. It was the time for testing of the diplomacy of both India and Pakistan. India's aggressive diplomacy has already isolated Pakistan from the rest of the world. However, Pakistan still has good relations with Islamic countries of gulf especially Saudi Arabia and the UAE. China has been its all-weather friend on whom Pakistan trusts wholly.

OIC not only criticised the barbaric Pulwama attack but also didn't oppose India's pre-emptive attack on JeM's terror camp at Balakot. It also snubbed Pakistan on withdrawing the invitation to Sushama Swaraj to be the guest of honour at the OIC conference. Pakistan protested and remained absent from the OIC conference which is being considered as 'Pakistan's mistake' even by Pakistan's media. The OIC which has always stood by Pakistan didn't follow Pakistan's line this time and rather gave India a platform to expose Pakistan. That's a great diplomatic win for India.

Second interesting diplomatic coup by India is China's support. February 14 Pulwama attack was condemned by China in strong words. The Chinese media houses like Global Times etc also mentioned that JeM did the attack. In UNSC, China didn't use its veto not to use JeM term in the condemnation. China didn't comment officially on Indian airstrike at JeM headquarter at Balakot but the Chinese media published reports neutrally citing both Pakistan and India's official version while mentioning unequivocally that JeM carried out the attack in Pulwama.

When Pakistan launched an offensive against India on 27 February it expected China to support it. But China was the first country to cancel all flights from and to Pakistan. The point to be noted is that no flight from or to India was cancelled by China. That was first major embarrassment for Pakistan following which it closed its airspace just to cover the Chinese snub. China urged both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint but in the article of Global Times, it for the first time used the term 'Pakistani Islamic terrorist attack' in Pulwama.

As per CNN/Hong Kong, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehemood Qureshi contacted Chinese foreign minister Wang Wi to play a constructive role in easing the current tensions. But Wang Wi very clearly stressed that Pakistan has violated the sovereignty and integrity of India with its 27 February offensive and China won't be a part of it. It's also considered that it was both China and Saudi Arabia's pressure for which Pakistan started pleading for peace and released Indian pilot immediately.

Many would really wonder on Chinese response at this moment which appears to be favouring India. But it's not new. Post Doklam face-off China has started giving India more importance. I always read media reports and articles of different countries to have an idea. I regularly read Chinese official media Global Times. Post Doklam I have never found a single article that was against India. On the contrary I came across a few articles which argued for better Indo-China relations. One such article titled 'Make in India' and 'Make in China' not zero sum game argues that both make in India and Made in China are not rivals rather complimentary to each other.

In some debates on Chinese news channels praises for Modi have increased manifolds. In one debate a Chinese expert called Narendra Modi a rockstar. I don't know whether China will veto the ongoing UN resolution on banning Masood Azhar as global terrorist as China will try to make Pakistan happy, but definitely China has started leaning towards India.

Some experts say that China can't afford to antagonise India during America-China trade war. This trade war is not going to end soon because both are economic rivals and thus it will continue. India's clear diplomacy is friend to all, enemy to none. That means it has good friendship with America as well as Russia, Saudi Arabia as well as Iran and Israel as well as Palestine. This type of diplomacy in fact wins hearts of all the countries. China doesn't want to displease India either because that will push India more towards America instead of a neutral/balanced diplomacy.

That's why it's win for India's diplomacy which was even able to make Pakistan's close friends (China, Saudi Arab, UAE etc) to stand alongside India. There might be global reasons and compulsions for international communities to be with India but then credit also goes to Narendra Modi-led India government's successful diplomacy.
