The eruption of Mount Sinabung, located in Sumatra forced more than 20,000 people to evacuate and stay at evacuation centers. The officials at Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre said Sinabung’s eruption occurred at 6:30 am. The amount of smoke released went as high as 2,000 metres up in the sky.
The volcano that stands at 2,451 metres erupted on Sunday forcing thousands to evacuate and reach out to safer places. The eruption occurred when the local government had assured the residents to return home and adding that that the volcano does not pose further danger.Sinabung volcano lies 1300 kilometres north west of Indonesian capital, Jakarta and had been heating up since last Thursday. Officials at the Karo district public relations said that till now, the number of refugees has reached 21,054 and the number is likely to increase if the situation worsens.
The untimely eruption has disrupted some local flights and the situation will remain same until further notice is served to the fliers.Government official, Surono, who uses only one name said that the volcano last erupted in 1600 and hence the observers at the Volcanology department did not know much about its eruption patterns.Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago and is more commonly known as the 'Ring of Fire'. Its series and arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircle all of the Pacific Basin.
