Indore-Patna Express derails in Kanpur: 90 dead, more than 100 injured
The Indore-Patna Express derailed near Pukhrayan area in UP's Kanpur Dehat district at around 3am on Sunday. 90 passengers died and more than 100 got injured after the 14 coaches of the ill-fated train derailed.

The train was going to Patna from Indore. Initial reports said that cracks in rail line may have caused the derailment. Sleeper coach number 1 and 2 and two general class boggies are worst affected.

The Indian Railways authorities have begun the relief and rescue operation with the help of NDRF and the Indian Army. The injured passengers are being taken to government and private hospitals in Kanpur. Meanwhile, railway authorities also said that the death toll could rise further.

Railways have announced helpline numbers to provide information to family members of the passengers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi , Rail Minister Suresh Prabhu have expressed grief over the loss of lives. The Home Minister Rajnath Singh has asked NDRF Director General O.P. Singh to provide all assistance to the Railway authorities and UP government in relief and rescue operations. 

The Indian Railways and the UP government have announced ex-gratia for the families of those killed in the train accident.

Railways said that 3.5 lakhs will be given to the next of kin of the dead, Rs.50,00 in case of grievous injury and Rs. 25,000 in case of simple injury. This ex-gratia will be in addition to the compensation that will be available through the Railway Claims Tribunal.

UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the killed and Rs.50000 to the seriously injured.

Rail minister Suresh Prabhu also said that an enquiry has been ordered into the accident and strict action will be taken against the responsible person(s).
