Franchitti denied Helio Castroneves a chance to become the fourth driver to win a record four times at Indianpolis 500 Brickyard. Castroneves was running in th top 3 until he stalled coming out of a pit stop on the 145th lap. He finished the ninth, as none of Roger Penske’s drivers came across in the top.
Tony Kannan started in the 33rd position and rose as high as second, but had to pit for splash of fuel with four lap to go and finished 11th. Earlier, the match begin with thrilling start with crash. Veteran IndyCar drivers Hamilton and Bruno Junqueira made quick exit from Sundays Indy 500. Hamilton lost control of his No. 21 car coming out of turn two on the opening lap, spinning into the inside retaining wall with heavy damage to the right side of his car. Junqueira went outside seven laps later when his No. 33 car got lost as he exited turn two and slammed hard into the outside wall.
The 47-year-old Hamilton was making his 10th career starts at the Brickyard and his first for de Ferran Dragon Racing. He started 14th in the 33-car field. It marked the second straight year the race’s first lap was marred by an accident. Mario Moraes and Marco Andretti collided in the opening lap last year. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the world’s largest spectator sporting facility, with more than 250,000 seats. If all the seat boards were laid end-to-end, they would stretch 99.5 miles.
