Infighting among the Congressmen in Uttarakhand will benefit its opponents
The ongoing tussle between the top two leaders of the Congress i.e. Harak Singh Rawat and Yashpal Arya in Uttarakhand is only damaging the party's poll prospects for the Vidhan Sabha elections that are due in the state in 2012.

THE CONGRESS led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre is under attack from all quarters especially on the issue of Lokpal bill and Corruption. After the two public movements led by social activist Anna Hazare and then by Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, the Congress party has been criticized vehemently by all and sundry for their police action at the ‘Ram Lila Maidan’ in the midnight where people were cane-charged and brutally assaulted this action by the Delhi police has annoyed the people of this country who dubbed the incident as unfortunate and commented that such an action reminded them of the Jalianwala Bagh massacre.

On the issue of black money and then on the drafting of the Lokpal bill, the Congress is facing attacks from every opposition party where its political opponents do not want to give any chance to the Congress to gain any political ground as elections are due in the state of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand in 2012.

The biggest challenge that has been coming to the Congress party right now is from the hilly state of Uttarakhand. There have been reports coming in the media both in the print and electronic, on the infighting that has been going on between two stalwarts of the state i.e. leader of opposition Harak Singh Rawat and the Congress state president, Yashpal Arya.

The two veterans are not seeing each other though party workers feel this will only harm the Congress in the long run. Well, when it comes to speak in the media, both the leaders say the same thing that party is supreme and they will be doing whatever best possible for the party.

Though it has been a ‘parampara’ (tradition) in the Congress party that they never disclose the name of candidate who will be going to take the oath as next chief minister, this serves two purposes. One, every candidate gives its hundred percent in the field and works with utmost honesty secondly, it brightens the chances of bagging the maximum seats in any political contest.

Now it has been learnt that some other stalwarts too are eyeing the chair of chief minister in Uttarakhand that include the names of leaders like Satpal Maharaj and Vijay Bahuguna. Well on one hand Yashpal Arya has the upper hand of being the state president then on other Satpal Maharaj is more experienced and is being looked upon as a bigger leader than Arya.

If the infighting among the Congressmen continues in Uttarakhand then the political benefit will go to the opponents like the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and it will be the Congress which will be paying heavily for the infighting and differences among its top leadership.
