Inspired by Dhoom, SSP takes to streets on bike
Faced with a series of dare-devil daylight chain snatching incidents by bike riding gangs, city police chief Akhil Kumar decided to get a "first hand account of the incident" and hence the bike ride across the roads of Ghaziabad
FOR ALL those who think policemen do not get time for movies, it might be time for a quick rethink. For the SSP of Ghaziabad not only seemingly is a movie buff but also seems to emulate the histronics of our reel heroes. Or so, it appeared recently when he took to the city streets on a bike with his officers in tow in similar fashion.

Faced with a series of dare-devil daylight chain snatching incidents by bike riding gangs, city police chief Akhil Kumar decided to get a "first hand account of the incident" and hence the bike ride across the city roads that included Indirapuram, Kavinagar, Holy Child square, Nehrunagar, GT Road, Ghantaghar and Mohannagar.

Dressed in plain clothes, the SSP was driven by a sub-inspector and was followed by his PRO Rashid Ali and a constable on a bike and his official car and escort in attendance.

He zeroed in on many areas where chain snatching picked up menacingly in recent times. The cavalcade of the police chief weaved through many other areas as well but they did not engage any criminal and the day passed off without any major success. On the contrary while the SSP was on round, the bike rider gangs struck at three places with complete impunity and disregard for law.

According to information available, while Akhil Kumar had just tread out of his official Rajnagar residence, biker gang struck and robbed an old man of his mobile. The incident took place a few metres from the SSP's official residence. The faith of the local man in the police can be gauged by the fact that when police asked him to lodge a complaint, he rebuked them and snapped back that this would be a futile exercise as the cops would not be able to get hold of the criminals.

Soon after the incident, the wirelss of cops puttered again with information that biker gang had struck again near Chandrashekhar park at Shalimar Garden Extension II where bike riders robbed a woman and decamped with her purse. In another one hour, the gang had struck at Vasundhara and snatched a chain of a woman. The incident took place when the SSP was in the vicinity.

Stung by the brazeneness, with which the biker was operating, Kumar ordered a complete clamp down around the area. The tight security paid off as a gangster was apprehended near RK Tower in Vasundhara. But while the move by the district police chief grabbed enough eye balls and media publicity, the SSP goofed up on one important front: he drove without a helmet - probably to allow the lensmen following him to get a clear view of his face!
